Golf Breaks in Lisbon

With every year that passes, the coastal area surrounding the cosmopolitan and sophisticated city of Lisbon is growing in popularity as a golfing holiday venue, and it's not too hard to figure out why. This region of Portugal is studded with an ample number of very fine courses, with some great new ones having opened in recent years.

With flights to Lisbon now available from most regions of the UK, there has never been a better time to enjoy the fabulous courses of this great golfing area.

The big bonus for anyone on a Lisbon golf holiday, however, is that the courses here are much quieter than those of the Algarve and the Costa del Sol, and just as important, the golf in this area offers great value for money. The climate is slightly cooler than the Algarve during the winter months, but in autumn, spring and early-summer the weather is great for golfing and this area really comes into its own.

The resorts in this region truly offer something for everyone. Estoril has miles of picturesque coastline and sophisticated nightlife including a casino. Cascais, once a sleepy fishing village is now a lively holiday resort with a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants, yet still retains much of its original charm.

Further south, Sesimbra on the Costa Azul is a fishing village where fishermen still live and work. On a golf-free day, a trip to historic and cultural Lisbon is a must. Visit Jeronimos Monastry, the Monument of the Discoveries, or savour the atmosphere in Rossio square. Downtown Lisbon has excellent shops and restaurants, as you would expect from a major European capital.

Drive north from Lisbon, and you come upon two of the best golf resorts in Portugal, Praia del Rey Golf Resort and the Royal Obidos Golf Resort. Here in this wonderful landscape bordering the Atlantic, you can enjoy the perfect golfing break in stunning surroundings. Although this area is quiet, the towns of Obidos and Caldas da Rainha have a great selection of bars and restaurants and are perfect for an enjoyable evening out.
