Elche - Inland from Alicante, Elche boasts a high proportion of palm trees and when you enter the town all roads are lined with its famous palms, ending with a palm tree grove. Elche is also a World Heritage Site, dedicated to its Arts and Traditions. The area has two nature reserves; the Santa Pola Sand Flats and the Parque Natural del Fondó. The flora and fauna of this area have adapted the wetness and saltiness and flourish well, especially in the summer months and you wmay ill be able to see the flamingos who make it their home. El Fondó Beauty Spot is located in the district of Baix Vinalopó, near the towns of Elche/Elx y Crevillente, and has two large reservoirs. Elche is also famous for its shoe manufacturing industry and clothing and confectionery production.
Skydiving Experiences In Castellon, Costa Blanca - A tandem skydive offers you the opportunity to enjoy the great thrill of skydiving as if you were a pro skydiver. Benidorm Beaches - Benidorm spends as much on keeping its beaches clean as some towns do their streets. There are three main beaches; Levante, which is just over two kilometres long and runs alongside the main British tourist area; Poiniente, to the south, and at over three kilometres the longest with mainly Spanish sunseekers; and the tiny Mal Pas, in a cove below the old town. They all are superbly sandy and have flown the Blue Flag for quality since it began in 1987.
Guadalest Mountains - One of the most popular excursions for visitors to Benidorm is a trip into the mountains to the walled village of Guadalest. After the Prado in Madrid and the Alhambra in Granada, Guadalest is the third most visited spot in Spain. There are plenty of “weird” museums and the highest graveyard in Spain.
Denia Castle - There has been a castle gazing over Dénia since Roman times and there are remains of buildings from various ages. The castle was used for defensive purposes until the end of the 19th-Century, from when the terraces were used for growing grapes for raisins. The Governor’s Palace at the top of the castle houses the Archaeological Museum and shows the evolution of the town from its Iberian origins until the 18th-Century.
Santa Bárbara Castle - The castle was captured from the Moors by Prince Alfonso of Castile (who later became King Alfonso X) in 1248. There are three main parts to the castle, with the Torre del Homenaje, the castle keep, known as La Torreta, housing the oldest remains of the fortress. There are splendid views over the old town and out to sea, and if you want to dally a while there is a restaurant and a shady picnic area. By the way, don’t break your back trying to walk up to the castle. There are two lifts hacked out of the rock that can carry you the one hundred and sixty six metres for a round trip fare of 2.50 euros.
Diving Routes - Sub-aqua diving has always been popular in the Mediterranean, not just for the warmth of its waters but for the wonderful divergence of its flora and fauna. Dénia was the first resort on the Costa Blanca to establish way-marked underwater routes, in the same way as walking routes are marked on dry land. As well as caves and coves you can also explore Felguera, (known locally as ‘El Vaporet’), a ship of approximately forty-five feet that sunk in the late nineteenth century.
Train Ride Down Coast - The FGV is a narrow-guage train that runs along the coast from Denia to Alicante (although you have to change at Benidorm to do the whole route). It is a lovely way to see a large part of the twisting Costa Blanca coastline, its tiny coves and small villages – some of the stops are little more than a bench to sit on. The train gives you a chance to visit most of the other resorts that have made the region so popular; Benidorm, Altea, Calpe etc, as well as the two terminal cities. The ride to Alicante is about two hours (fifty minutes to Benidorm), and twenty-five minutes to Dénia.
Fish Market and Auction - If you go to the fishing port at around four in the afternoon you will see the fishing boats returning with their day’s catch. The auction starts at five, and takes place at an astonishing speed, with the price lowering (the reverse to an English auction) until someone shouts, “¡Basta!” (“Enough!”). Part of the catch goes on sale to the public at Posit, the small market which forms part of La Lonja.
Moraira Stroll - Moraira is small enough to stroll and see most of the sites in under an hour, but it’s a pleasing way to pass an evening. The main historic building is the 18t-Century Castillo, which sits beside l’Ampolla beach. Moraira was, and still is, a fishing village, and many of the tiny, narrow streets of the old town are reminiscent of the old fishing villages of Cornwall.
