The borders of Bulgaria are defined by the Danube, the Black Sea and Greece and Turkey to the south. Its climate varies a lot with Alpine influence in the north and the warmth of the Mediterranean in the south and around the Black Sea to the east. There are two distinct golfing regions in Bulgaria:

• Cape Kaliakra – formed by the three signature golf courses of Lighthouse (Ian Woosnam), BlackSeaRama (Gary Player), and the flagship Thracian Cliffs (Gary Player). Cape Kaliakra has long been known as a holiday destination resort and mixes sleek yachts with seaside charm.

• Sofia Region – comprising St.Sofia Golf Club (Paul McGinnley), Pravets Golf Resort (Peter Harradine), and Pirin Golf and Country Club (Ian Woosnam)

Golf Breaks Bulgaria

Both regions offer quality resorts at value to rival anywhere else. You can liken golf in Bulgaria to a “boutique” version of Turkey – the hotels are smaller and there are fewer courses but there’s more après-golf outside the hotel. At the golf resorts and in the nearby towns, you can find most types of restaurants with seafood from the Black Sea being top of the menu.

We offer both half-board and all-inclusive and eating out is refreshingly cheap. Bulgaria is known as one of the big European producers of beers and not by chance do the top European brands have their main breweries here. The local brands of Zagorka, Shoumensko, Ariana (and many others), including top quality ones, cost about €1 a pint.

Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort, Bulgaria4 star

Situated on a beautiful bay next to the Black Sea coast, only 45 minutes north of Varna International Airport, the breathtaking views and sunny climate make it a perfect destination for your holiday break. The five-star hotel and spa will open in March 2011. In 2010, accommodation will be in the fully-serviced resort’s apartments. These are one or two-bedroom suites with kitchens, mini bars and large dining/lounge area. Breakfast is taken in the clubhouse restaurant which also caters for lunch and dinner. International cuisine and local Bulgarian dishes are on the menu, and the wines and beer are excellent value. BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas5 star

These individual and semi-detached villas are beautifully decorated and best suited for couples or small groups of friends looking for an upmarket peaceful resort. The villas are fully serviced with a shop on site, a large communal pool or private pool for the four-bedroom versions. The resort produces its own wine which is very good and incredible value. It also has its own mineral spring on-site, a fishing lake and spa. There’s a private beach club just a short ride away, complete with bar and restaurant for daytime snacks and lunches. Non-golf activities such as boat trips, hunting, castle visit with dinner and wine tasting and nights out in nearby Albena and Balchik can all be easily arranged.
